Senada Šelo Šabić, PhD, Scientific Adviser, took part in Hrvatski radio’s Dossier Europa, aired on 9 June 2026, where she discussed the current challenges and prospects of European Union enlargement.

In the interview, she commented on the new Franco-German proposal for gradual accession, which foresees a phased integration of candidate countries through easier access to the single market, observer status in EU institutions, and participation in informal Council meetings.

Particular attention was given to Ukraine’s prospects in the context of accelerating geopolitical circumstances, as well as to the Union’s capacity to absorb new members. Šelo Šabić also analysed the position of Western Balkan countries — Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina — together with their individual challenges and the dynamics of the accession process.

She also spoke about the possible effects of future enlargement on the Union itself, including institutional, political and economic implications.
