In celebration of International Open Access Week (#OAweek), held this year from October 21 to 27, 2024, IRMO librarian Maja Hoić delivered a lecture titled “Open Access, AI, and CC Licenses: Balancing Openness and Commercialization” at events organized by the Penkala Association. The lecture took place on October 22, 2024, at the Institute of Physics in Zagreb and covered key topics on the role of open access and licensing in scholarly publishing, with a particular focus on the challenges associated with the commercialization of research outcomes in artificial intelligence development.

In alignment with this year’s theme, Hoić highlighted the importance of balancing openness and commercialization of research outcomes in shaping open science and artificial intelligence policies, especially in the context of publicly funded projects where access to scientific research is often governed by specific licensing rules. As a member of the CoARA (Coalition for the Advancement of Research Assessment) Working Group on Ethics and Research Integrity in AI Use, she presented the group’s work on developing guidelines and tools to promote ethical use of scholarly works and responsible assessment of data and AI in research.

International Open Access Week is a global event promoting the practice of freely sharing scientific research to improve scholarly communication and remove barriers to scientific information. The Croatian scientific community increasingly recognizes the importance of this practice, as reflected in numerous activities and events throughout the week. Maja Hoić’s participation in this event reaffirms IRMO’s activities in promoting open science.
