IRMO Brief no. 11/2017 deals with the media analysis of the German federal election results. The focus is on the relation between the 2015 German migration policy and the recent election results. Relevant media that followed Chancellor Merkel’s open door migration policy influenced the perception of Germany as a humanitarian power in the international community. The author argues that it was precisely this policy that largely influenced the results of this federal election. The growing populism and the weak election results of the “grand coalition” give rise to the question whether the humanitarian world power (Weltmacht) allegory is only a perception or is based on policies.
