Sanja Tišma, Ph.D in Economics, is a scientific advisor with tenure and Head of the Department for Resource Economics, Environmental Protection and Regional Development at the Institute for Development and International Relations (IRMO) in Zagreb, Croatia. She has been employed at IRMO since 1989, building a distinguished academic and professional career in the fields of sustainable development, environmental economics, and strategic development management. Since 2001 she has led her department, and from June 2009 to June 2025, she served as Director of IRMO. Throughout her career, Dr. Tišma has focused her research on topics such as sustainable development, good governance, environmental economics and finance, and strategic planning in public policy. In recent years, she has also addressed the emerging intersection between artificial intelligence and sustainable business development. In addition to her research activities, she has contributed to higher education as a lecturer at the Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Law, and the Faculty of Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Zagreb.

Dr. Tišma has published the results of her research in numerous scientific papers and authored eleven academic books. Notable titles include Klimatska kuharica (Climate Cookbook, Ljevak, Zagreb, 2024), Green Jobs for Sustainable Development (Routledge, London, 2016), Environmental Finance and Development (Routledge, London, 2012), and Economics, Ecology, and Policy for the Bioeconomy: A Holistic Approach (Routledge, London, 2022). This last book explores the transition toward sustainable, bio-based economies and contributes to European and global debates on the green transformation.

She has consistently demonstrated strong engagement in applied research and policy advising through her leadership and participation in numerous development projects funded by the European Commission (programmes such as OBNOVA, CARDS, PHARE, ISPA, IPA, INTERREG, ERASMUS+, FP7, Horizon 2020), as well as projects supported by the World Bank, UNDP, and UNESCO. These projects have been implemented both in Croatia and internationally, covering areas such as environmental policy, sustainable resource use, strategic development, and institutional capacity-building.

Dr. Tišma is also an active member of several professional and academic networks and organizations. These include the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC), the Croatian Section of the European Regional Science Association (ERSA), the European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI), Society for Sustainable Development Design (DOOR), the Karst Network, the International Society for Ecological Economics (ISEE), and the Croatian Evaluation Society.
