IRMO Brief No 04/2017 highlights the importance of the “frozen conflicts” in the former Soviet space for the security environment in Europe. These conflicts have been generated by ethnic reasons, but have become an instrument to maintain the region into a political limbo.
The analysis depicts how Russia managed to move to a more assertive policy following the experience gained in managing the “frozen conflicts”. The issue underlines the increasing role of the EU in modernising the region and identifies the prospects for improvement in the next years.
