IRMO participated in the EASE Autumn Symposium 2024, organized by the European Association of Science Editors (EASE), with an invited talk “Exploring AI tools for academic research” as part of the session AI and Digital Tools for Authors. The talk was delivered by IRMO’s librarian, Maja Hoić.
The EASE Autumn Symposium 2024, held on November 26, 2024, via Zoom, brought together experts in scientific publishing to discuss the latest innovations in applying artificial intelligence and digital tools. The program included plenary and parallel sessions aimed at authors, manuscript editors, journal editors, and reviewers, with a special focus on ethical issues and practical applications of AI in scientific publishing.
Talk Summary
Over the past three years, there has been a significant rise in AI tools such as Elicit, Epsilon, Sourcely, and System Pro, which use natural language processing (NLP) to help researchers find relevant papers—particularly in the modern “publish or perish” environment. This talk explores these AI research assistant tools, analyzing their data sources, the AI models they rely on, and their limitations. It also introduces new tools under development, including Scopus AI by Elsevier and a solution being prepared by Web of Science.
