Sandro Knezović, Research Adviser at the Institute for Development and International Relations, in collaboration with Marina Tkalec, Senior Research Associate at the Institute of Economics, has published a research article in the journal Peace Economics, Peace Science and Public Policy (published by De Gruyter Brill, ranked Q2 according to Scopus).
The authors examine how defense spending and armed conflicts affect the economic growth of European countries. The analysis covers 40 European nations over the period from 1999 to 2023, with a particular focus on changes in security dynamics after 2014. By analyzing empirical data, the authors examine how variations in defense budgets influence both the likelihood of conflicts and the trajectory of economic growth. The findings contribute to a nuanced understanding of defense economics and offer insights relevant to policymakers and scholars interested in the interplay between security spending and economic development. The study provides important insights into the delicate balance between security policy and economic sustainability, and calls for carefully considered public policies that will not compromise long-term economic development.
