The October 2024 edition of the IRMO Brief, authored by Carlos Uriarte Sánchez and Tia Koprivnjak, deals with the strategic role of Spain in creating a stronger nexus between the European Union and Latin American countries. Spain’s unique position, historical ties, its economic allure and EU membership, make it a pivotal player in bridging trading, diplomatic, cultural and talent exchange between Europe and Latin America. Beyond history, Spain plays a crucial role as an economic bridge as several Spanish companies invest significantly in Latin America, facilitating trade and investment flows between two sides. During the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of 2023, the Global Gateway tool, which allocates €45 billion for Latin America, was realized. The authors also analyze how Spain’s diplomacy actively promotes cooperation between the EU and Latin America through forums like the Ibero-American and EU-CELAC summits.
