What is the connection between artificial intelligence and sustainability, how can its potential be used responsibly, and how can we understand its impacts on society, the economy, and business — these are some of the questions that will be discussed at the workshop “Understanding Artificial Intelligence”, which will take place as part of the 17th Conference on Sustainable Development, on November 11 and 12, 2025, at the Esplanade Zagreb Hotel.

The workshop will provide participants with an introduction to the basic concepts of artificial intelligence (AI), as well as the risks, challenges, and opportunities that accompany its practical application. Special emphasis will be placed on high-risk AI systems, risk management, privacy policies, security, and the responsible use of technology in the context of sustainable development.

The workshop speakers will be:
• Ivana Keser, PhD, Research Associate, Institute for Development and International Relations (IRMO)
• Associate Professor Mihael Mišo Mudrić, PhD, Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb
• Sanja Tišma, PhD, Senior Scientific Adviser and Head of the Department for Resource Economics, Institute for Development and International Relations (IRMO)
