Panel under the title “Burden Sharing and Alliance Cohesion: What to Expect From NATO Ankara Summit”, was co-hosted by the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye, Directorate of Communications, the Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye, and the Institute for Development and International Relations (IRMO), on 2nd July 2026, at the Sheraton Hotel in Zagreb. 

The Panel was intended to assess the pressures of increasing defense expenditures to 5% of GDP on member states, identify threats to NATO’s integrity in a rapidly changing security environment, anticipate strategic decisions and new defense commitments that may emerge from Ankara Summit, and evaluate Türkiye’s contribution to the Alliance 

The panel, moderated by IRMO Expert Advisor Krševan Antun Dujmović, M.Sc., included the following speakers: Prof. Murat Yeşiltaş, Social Sciences University of Ankara, Faculty of Political Science; Prof. Gordan Akrap, Vice-Rector of the Dr. Franjo Tuđman Defence and Security University in Zagreb; Prof. Kılıç Buğra Kanat, Research Director at the Foundation for Political, Economic and Social Research (SETA), Washington DC; and Sandro Knezović, PhD, Research Advisor at IRMO. 

At the NATO Ankara Summit which will be held on 7th and 8th July, the twin concepts of burden sharing and alliance cohesion will be the key points of dissociation among NATO Allies.
