The September 2024 edition of the IRMO Brief, authored by Darren G. Spinck, deals with the foreign policy of the United States after the presidential election set to be held on 5th November 2024. The term of the current U.S. president, Joe Biden, saw a decline of American geopolitical influence and a transition from a unipolar world to multipolarity. Signs of American restraint from global affairs were manifested during hurried U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021. Currently, the U.S. is faced with three major challengers to its global dominance: Russia in Ukraine, China in the Indo-Pacific and Iran in the Middle East. One of two presidential candidates, Democratic nominee and current U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, or Republican nominee and former U.S. president, Donald Trump, will face these global challengers once elected to the White House. The author also analyses the prospects for future U.S. trade policy under Harris or Trump, especially relations with China and EU.
