The September 2023 edition of the IRMO Brief, authored by Rania Mohammad Ibrahim, deals with Egypt and its geostrategic position in the Middle East and Africa. In 2011, the Arab Spring reshaped Egypt’s relationships with various countries, leading to intricate diplomatic shifts. While Egypt is trying to upgrade its relations with Qatar, Iran and Türkiye, the ties with the neighboring Saudi Arabia remain strong. On the African side, the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), a monumental hydroelectric project situated on the Blue Nile River, has put a strain between Egypt and Ethiopia. Egypt has also announced in August 2023, along with the other five candidate countries, its intention to join the BRICS group of emerging economies. The author also analyses how the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine has affected Egypt’s relations with Russia and the USA.
