The thrid issue of IRMO Briefs analyzes the Challenges and opportunities for EU’s Energy Union strategy. After launching its Energy Union Strategy in February 2015, the European Union was faced in September 2015 with an unexpected challenge of combined German-Russian initiative to build Nord Stream 2 pipeline. The Brief deals with the responses to the Nord Stream 2 by the Eastern European countries which saw the project as a threat to their energy security. Finally, the author analyzes the importance of the Southern Gas Corridor of the EU, and the role of gas from the Caspian Sea for energy security of Europe.
