The May 2023 edition of the IRMO Brief, authored by Matea Roknić and Krševan Antun Dujmović, deals with the cultural policies of the European Union. In order to shape cultural policies as a tool of its soft power and to strengthen its global influence, the EU cooperates with organizations such as UNESCO, OECD and the Council of Europe. The outbreak COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 threatened many European cultural initiatives, and the EU responded with its recovery plan named NextGenerationEU (NGEU). Under the Creative Europe Programme, the EU has started a project with the aim to ensure the allocation of financial resources of National Recovery and Resilience Plans to culture. The authors also analyze how the EU is helping to preserve the cultural heritage of Ukraine, which is currently exposed to brutal Russian destruction.
