The December 2023 edition of the IRMO Brief, authored by Darren G. Spinck, deals with the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, and the reaction of the international community. The support for Israel after the 7th October 2023 terror attack by Hamas seemed unwavering in the West, both in Europe and the USA. However, after Israel introduced a big-scale ground invasion of Gaza, a large number of massive pro-Palestinian protests erupted in many Western countries. With the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine and growing criticism of Israel, the number of European political leaders calling for a ceasefire in Gaza is growing. In the USA, which is bracing for the November 2024 presidential election, the opposition to Israel’s actions is also growing. Furthermore, the author analyses how Russia is benefiting from the fact that the focus of the international community has shifted from its war in Ukraine to Gaza.
