The paper presents the results of research on illegal activities in protected areas, especially those related to tourism. Using the FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) method and sensitivity analysis, key high-risk activities specific to different parks were identified. Coastal parks are found to be particularly vulnerable to maritime-related illegal activities, with high risk exposure from mooring vessels and swimming in prohibited areas. These parks also face significant risks from illegal fishing and the capture of strictly protected plants and animals, highlighting the need for enhanced marine ecosystem protection. Mountainous and forest parks face significant risks from fire-related activities, while wetland parks are sensitive to poaching and illegal fishing. In all protected areas, there is an increased sensitivity to illegal waste disposal. By analyzing the specificities and vulnerabilities of each individual protected area, the research contributes to insights into the possibilities of mitigating the environmental threats posed by tourism. The results of the research presented in this scientific paper indicate the need for tailored risk management strategies in protected areas in Croatia that would emphasize interventions based on the specific challenges for each park. It also emphasizes the importance of continuous monitoring and adaptive management in protected areas.
