The article examines the evolution of representative democracy in Croatia since its independence until today. The analysis is founded on historic institutionalism, which strikes a balance between the rational choice approach and sociological institutionalism. The article explores the processes of long-term institutional change and primarily evaluates transformations of the electoral system. However, it also looks beyond to the role of direct democracy, with its corrective impacts on the main political actors.
