The November 2023 edition of the IRMO Brief, authored by Thomas Brey, deals with Russian propaganda in the EU amidst Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Russian propaganda uses many examples to “prove” that the authoritarian Russian regime is superior to parliamentary democracies in the West. Western authorities, governments, parties and state institutions are portrayed as incapable of solving the many current problems in their countries. Furthermore, the central point of the Kremlin’s propaganda machine is its war against Ukraine. To achieve its objectives, Russia’s propaganda strategies use tools like the state media including RT (former Russia Today) and Sputnik. Above all most important accelerators of Russian propaganda are social media, including Chinese TikTok and Russian Telegram channels, Facebook and YouTube. The author also analyses the importance of countries like Germany, France, Hungary, Slovakia and Bulgaria for Russia’s foreign policy and its propaganda efforts.
