Project duration: 11/2009 – 09/2010

Client: European Commission for the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Physical Planning and Construction and Environmental Protection Agency (RAMBOL, Denmark)

Team leader: Sanja Tišma, PhD

One of the research topics that was initiated in 2009 was the analysis of European directives in the field of hazardous wastes and preparation of analytical materials and models for continuous monitoring and sustainable management in the future. In the scope of the project the researchers have prepared a methodology for analyzing the hazardous waste market in the Republic of Croatia, prepared and conducted a survey on a sample of 6000 companies on the quantities of hazardous waste produced by the economy and identify critical points related to hazardous waste at the county level, at the level of cities and municipalities. Basic research findings on the types and quantities of hazardous waste have pointed out the deficiencies in monitoring and collecting the quantities produced and the lack of information on the disposal/storage of most of hazardous waste. The findings and recommendations of the study will provide decision-makers in preparing a new system (strategy) of hazardous waste management in Croatia.
